Into games- 4v4 CottageCore Character Design sprint

These were my characters for Lucy Kyriakidou Character design sprint that I participated in last year at intogames. The idea was to create a line up for a 4v4 game based around the theme of cottagecore.

I loved the idea of going with something a bit darker and in my research I found there was the closely related concept of “cottagegore”, a darker witchier themed version. This sparked the idea in my head of the team being a team of witches. It got me thinking of a community of witches living in the woods helping each other out, maybe the are fighting off witch hunters.

During the design process I came up with a few animal creature ideas I liked and I thought the theme of ‘witches and their familiars ‘would be perfect. So I ended up creating a classic witches black cat and I also liked the idea that they use magic to bring things to life, so the scarecrow is one of their magical helpers.

I created the kettle lady as the tank character, she uses a kettle and Cauldron as weapons. I imagine her being the protective witch of the community.

The Girl with the scythe I think of as the younger rebellious witch. I wanted her to have a bit of a traditional salem witch/farmgirl look but a little more fashionable as she tries to separate herself from the older witches. Uses her scythe as a weapon along with magic.

I loved the idea of a blind cat being an assassin, he can uses his senses to detect you, and maybe a bit of magic . He’s wearing some knitted leg warmers and arm warmers knitted by the tank witch.

The scarecrow I had a lot of fun with. I really liked the idea of him being filled with joy, almost like he is skipping along. As he is magically re animated he is just thrilled to be alive. I liked the idea of his silhouette being a bit more imposing than his body, so I draped his coat across his scarecrow cross to give him a large shape in silhouette. He uses his raven for ranged attacks and stick as close range weapon.

This was a lot of fun to participate in. I've included the rough sketches warts and all because I think its good to see the design proces and what led up to the final designs.
