This is a Book Cover I illustrated last year for David Passafiume upcoming Book "The City of Meridian"
Was great fun working on this project, the city of meridian was described as a " city of bounty, promising wealth and power to those canny enough to seize it." The story had a somewhat noir detective feel to it, which I tried to capture the feel of in the cover, with the strong spotlighting and shadows.
It also was fun to try and make a world that felt grounded but also had a mix of various styles and cultures. The book has themes of the Rich and poor divide within the city, which I tried to capture with the contrast of clothing styles and architectures, all within one image.
The main character Drawna is an investigator of tricky cases, she knows the city well, having been born there. I had a lot of fun designing her, I wanted to capture her confident nature in her pose and expression, then add some storytelling with the design of her costume. I kept her outfit quite simple and functional, but wanted to add something that implied her wealthy background and place in society. I wanted to add some cloth elements to soften her a bit and also add to sense of fashion and style in the city. I experimented with some various ideas of venetian type cloaks and cloth, then added a few accessories of gold and silver, that relate back to religions and symbols in the book and hint at her wealthy upbringing.
